City plans ambitious two-phase park renovation project

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the ongoing development of the Veil Connection project at Riverfront Park, which is currently facing budgetary challenges. The project, initially planned to be completed in one phase, is now being considered for a two-phase approach to better manage costs and timelines. City Administrator Darren proposed this strategy, which would allow for the completion of the bathroom facilities in the first phase, while the trail and parking lot would follow in the second phase.

The project is funded through a federal grant, which mandates completion by October 2026. The city is committed to fulfilling all obligations outlined in the grant, despite the current budget exceeding initial estimates. Efforts are underway to secure additional funding, with the local Lions Club expressing verbal support for financial contributions once a concept drawing is provided.

In addition to the Veil Connection project, the meeting also touched on the renovation of the flag plaza, which will include the installation of a memorial brick garden, relocation of flagpoles, and enhancements to landscaping and seating areas. This renovation is closely linked to the trail and parking lot project, as construction will impact the same area.

The city is still awaiting an environmental report from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which is crucial for moving forward with the project. The report, submitted earlier in the summer, is currently under review by tribal authorities.

Lastly, updates were provided regarding the stage roof project, with work expected to commence shortly. Preparatory tasks, including the relocation of a water line and landscaping adjustments, are set to begin soon, with materials like steel already on order. Further developments on both projects are anticipated in the coming months.
