City Commission Approves Controversial 120 Acre Rezoning Plan

In a recent government meeting, the commission approved a significant rezoning application affecting approximately 120 acres located northeast of the intersection of North Branstad Road and Murphy Mill Road. The property, owned by Stern Corp Investment Group, will be rezoned from Agricultural Conservation (AC) to Residential (R1) zoning, which imposes stricter regulations, including restrictions on livestock.

Ron Reeves, representing the investment group, advocated for the R1 designation, emphasizing its benefits for the community and the city’s regulatory authority. The commission held a public hearing on this matter, during which no additional public comments were made, leading to the closure of the hearing.

The commission also addressed a separate public hearing regarding the assessment of weed abatement costs against various properties, which similarly concluded without public input.

Following discussions, the commission moved forward with a motion for immediate consideration of the rezoning ordinance, which was met with unanimous approval. Mayor noted that concerns raised during the planning commission meeting would largely be addressed in the forthcoming development plans, ensuring that community interests are considered as the project progresses.
