Holland declares National Good Neighbor Day to strengthen communities

In a recent meeting, the Holland City Council, led by Mayor Nathan Box, proclaimed September 28, 2024, as National Good Neighbor Day, emphasizing the importance of community connections in fostering safe and healthy neighborhoods. The proclamation highlighted research indicating that cohesive neighborhoods significantly enhance the physical and mental well-being of residents, contributing to stronger local economies and more effective responses to social issues.

Mayor Box noted the alarming rise in loneliness and isolation affecting communities, which has detrimental effects on individuals' health and life expectancy. He urged citizens to actively participate in nurturing their neighborhoods, not just on the designated day but throughout the year.

The meeting also recognized the contributions of local organizations, particularly 360, which was honored as the top neighborhood connector group in the United States. Their efforts, along with those of other community groups, have been pivotal in promoting neighborliness and civic engagement in Holland.
