City officials unveil ambitious plan for Main Street bridge reconstruction

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant updates regarding the Main Street bridge project in Watertown, which has been in the works since 2019. The project aims to replace the deteriorating bridge, with the city committing to cover 25% of the design costs while the state will fund the remaining expenses and all eligible construction costs.

Key milestones in the project timeline were highlighted, including the closure of a sidewalk on the bridge in March 2022 due to safety concerns, and the engagement of structural analysis by Mead and Hunt in December 2022. A notable development occurred in July 2023 when the Wisconsin Legislature allocated $2 million for the bridge reconstruction, which includes stabilizing the adjacent Masonic Temple building.

The Watertown Common Council approved a contract with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WSDOT) for stabilization work, with construction expected to begin as early as 2024. However, city officials announced delays to the project timeline, which had previously been communicated to the public.

Financial details revealed that approximately $500,000 has been spent on bridge maintenance since 2016, with an additional $800,000 allocated for the design of the new bridge. The project is being managed by WSDOT, with Zinnett Tech contracted for construction, while the city plays a supportive role in funding and project oversight.

As the project progresses, officials emphasized the importance of public awareness and communication regarding the bridge's status and the associated construction activities.
