City imposes hefty fines for housing code violations

In a recent government meeting, officials addressed a new case concerning a property violation in the city. The case involves non-compliance with city code section 16-49(b) related to overgrowth and section 101.6 of the standard housing code regarding a fence in disrepair.

City representatives reported that there has been minimal contact with the property owner, noting that only the perimeter of the fence has been maintained. An initial inspection was conducted on June 20, 2024, with a notice of violation mailed on July 25 and served via certified mail on July 29. The deadline for compliance was set for August 3, but the property remains non-compliant.

As a result, civil fines will commence on August 4 and continue through September 18, accumulating at a rate of $100 per day, totaling $4,600 for 46 days. Additionally, inspection costs amount to $390. The city has requested that these findings be entered into evidence, and the hearing officer has confirmed the ongoing violations and imposed the fines accordingly.

Furthermore, a representative of the property owner is required to attend the next hearing to address the violations. This case highlights the city's commitment to enforcing housing codes and maintaining community standards.
