Developer proposes ambitious renovation of historic downtown building

In a recent government meeting, local developers presented plans for a significant renovation and rezone of the historic Miramar Plaza in downtown Sarasota. The proposal includes the construction of two 18-story residential buildings, alongside the rehabilitation of existing commercial and retail spaces. The developers emphasized their commitment to preserving the building's historical significance while enhancing the pedestrian experience along Palm Avenue.

The project aims to restore the property to its original design from the 1920s, which featured open spaces and corridors. The developers noted that the new design would create more view corridors and public spaces, ultimately contributing to the livability of downtown Sarasota. They highlighted that the proposed rezone would actually result in less cubic space than what is currently allowed under existing zoning, which permits a 10-story building.

The developers, who are local residents and business owners, expressed their dedication to the community, stating that they are different from larger companies that typically pursue profit-driven projects. They reassured attendees that their plans would not increase the density of the property, as the current zoning already allows for 70 residential units.

The meeting also included an invitation for community feedback, with attendees encouraged to submit questions and comments via post-it notes.
