City launches grant program to light up historic downtown

In a recent city council meeting, officials unanimously approved a motion to waive the purchasing policy requiring three written quotes for a project involving the relocation of fuel tanks at the airport. The council agreed to a quote from Innovative Fueling Solutions, not to exceed $21,000, for the relocation of two 28,000-gallon tanks.

Additionally, the council discussed a new Downtown Lighting Grant Program aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the historic landmark district during the holiday season. The program will provide financial incentives to property owners and tenants for the installation of decorative lighting. A total of $15,000 has been allocated for this initiative, with grants ranging from $300 to $2,000 per applicant. The program will operate on a first-come, first-served basis until the funds are exhausted.

The lighting initiative requires that all installations use warm white C9 bulbs to ensure a cohesive look throughout the downtown area. The city aims to encourage year-round use of the lights, with installations needing to be completed by licensed and insured contractors. The program is designed to shift the responsibility of installation and maintenance to property owners, alleviating the city of liability concerns associated with previous lighting efforts.

Council members expressed optimism about the program, noting significant interest from downtown building owners. The first round of applications is set to open immediately upon approval, with the hope that the initiative will revitalize the downtown area and foster community engagement during the holiday season.
