Landmarks Board proposes historic change after 50 years

In a recent meeting, the Landmarks Board unanimously approved significant changes to its administrative rules, marking the most substantial update in 50 years. The revisions, adopted on September 4, 2024, aim to streamline the review process for various projects, enhancing efficiency for board members, staff, and applicants alike.

The board's decision to remove the Planning Board's ex officio position from its composition was a key topic of discussion. This change is rooted in a historical review of the board's structure, which originally included the position to facilitate integration between the two boards. However, over the decades, the Landmarks Board has developed considerable expertise and institutional support, rendering the ex officio role less necessary.

The proposed amendment to the Boulder Revised Code is expected to significantly reduce the volunteer time commitment for the Planning Board member, estimated at 58 hours annually. Board members expressed strong support for the change, emphasizing the Landmarks Board's proficiency in handling quasi-judicial procedures without the need for additional oversight from the Planning Board.

The meeting also touched on upcoming training for board chairs and vice chairs, as well as the potential rescheduling of the January meeting due to the New Year holiday. Additionally, the board discussed a public comment regarding a letter of support for the Boulder County Courthouse.
