Rockland High School celebrates record AP exam success

Rockland High School has reported significant advancements in its Advanced Placement (AP) program, showcasing a remarkable increase in both participation and success rates among students. During a recent government meeting, school representatives highlighted the school’s offerings, which include 14 AP subjects ranging from art to calculus and environmental science.

The data presented revealed a notable recovery from the pandemic's impact on student performance. In the 2022-2023 academic year, Rockland High School administered 287 AP exams, achieving a passing rate of 70% with an average score of 3.1, marking a substantial rise from previous years. This improvement is particularly impressive given that the pass rate was only 46% the year prior.

Key highlights from the report included a 100% pass rate for students in AP Research and AP Art, as well as strong performances in AP English courses, with pass rates of 63% for AP Language and 88% for AP Literature. The school also noted a 67% pass rate in AP Computer Science, which is offered through a remote program.

Rockland High School has been recognized with a silver status on the AP Honor Roll, just shy of gold, based on the percentage of students taking AP exams. Currently, 52% of the graduating class has participated in AP courses, and 34% have scored a 3 or higher on any AP exam, which can lead to significant savings on college tuition.

The school is also adapting to changes in AP testing formats, transitioning to digital and hybrid assessments for several subjects. This shift aims to enhance the testing experience and provide students with more opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge.
