School district tackles chronic absenteeism with strict new policies

During a recent government meeting, the superintendent of schools presented several policy resolutions for approval, including the first readings of policies 3160, 4160, 5350, and 6620, as well as the second reading of policy 0155. All proposed policies received unanimous support from board members present.

In the liaison reports, updates from the Freehold Regional School District highlighted significant changes in their approach to student attendance. Newly sworn-in member Jennifer Coward will serve until December 31, 2024, replacing Matt Parisi. The district is adopting a stricter stance on attendance, addressing the alarming statistic that 25% of students are chronically absent, defined as missing 18 days or more in a school year. The administration plans to withhold credit from students who do not meet attendance requirements, with a particular focus on freshmen.

Additionally, the district reported positive feedback regarding a new cell phone policy, which has reportedly reduced distractions in the classroom, although some students may have differing opinions on its effectiveness.
