Pickleball program expands amid community debate

During a recent council meeting, discussions centered around the ongoing pickleball program at Hoboken Palmer Park, which has been trialed since January. Robert, a representative, provided an update on the program, highlighting a public survey conducted to gauge interest and feedback on the trial. The survey concluded at the end of July, and the results indicated sufficient community interest in continuing pickleball without significantly impacting tennis usage at the park.

The Park and Recreation subcommittee proposed several recommendations to enhance the pickleball experience, including extending playtime and introducing drop-in play opportunities. Currently, reservations are required for court usage, but the subcommittee suggested making one court available for drop-in play while keeping the other reservable. Additionally, they recommended expanding pickleball hours to include Sundays.

Concerns were raised by council members regarding noise levels associated with drop-in play, particularly from tennis players who have previously expressed discomfort with the noise generated by congregating players. Some members questioned the feasibility of the drop-in model, suggesting that it could lead to increased disturbances.

The council is now tasked with deciding whether to implement the subcommittee's recommendations, including the potential for drop-in play and the proposed schedule changes. The outcome of this decision will shape the future of pickleball at Hoboken Palmer Park, balancing community interest with the needs of existing tennis players.
