Coastal development permit sparks community safety concerns

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed a proposed coastal development project in the Myrtle Town area of Eureka, which involves the construction of a 456 square foot accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on a parcel currently housing a 1,256 square foot single-family residence. The project is located near Hall Avenue and Wellington Street and is served by community water and sewer systems.

The proposal has drawn public scrutiny, with some residents expressing concerns about the stability of the roadway infrastructure on Wellington Street and the potential for increased traffic to pose safety risks. However, the County Department of Public Works reviewed the project and did not raise any concerns regarding the road's capacity or safety.

Staff members recommended that the commission approve the coastal development permit, asserting that the project qualifies for an exemption from environmental review under specific guidelines. The commission was invited to ask clarifying questions before making a decision on the matter.
