Community rallies for major upgrades to athletic facilities

During a recent government meeting, the Sycamore Athletic Boosters presented a compelling case for the urgent need to improve local sports facilities, particularly for softball and baseball. Booster president, Mike Thomas, emphasized the disparity between the community's current facilities and those of neighboring districts, which has raised concerns among parents and alumni.

The Boosters, representing over 300 members, have committed to a significant financial investment, pledging $50,000 annually through 2041, totaling approximately $1.19 million. This commitment includes recent donations of $85,000 for a new stadium entrance, $15,000 for a natatorium, and $40,000 for field house improvements. Thomas warned that without visible progress on facility upgrades, future donations could dwindle, jeopardizing the momentum needed for these projects.

Board members acknowledged the Boosters' contributions and expressed their commitment to moving forward with facility improvements. They highlighted the importance of maintaining community engagement and support for athletics, noting that the success of these initiatives impacts not only student athletes but the entire community.

The board is currently evaluating the budget for the first phase of the project, with indications that they are leaning towards a 70-30 funding model, contingent on final cost assessments. Board members reiterated the necessity of making timely decisions to sustain community interest and support.
