County plans major redevelopment of former landfill into sports fields

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the advancement of a significant Brownfield redevelopment project aimed at transforming a former landfill site into competitive baseball and softball fields. The initiative, supported by a $670,000 loan from the county's revolving loan fund, is part of a broader effort to revitalize underutilized properties and promote community engagement in sports.

Michelle Christina from Brownfield Redevelopment Solutions (BRS) presented the project, highlighting its importance in addressing environmental concerns while fostering local recreational opportunities. The redevelopment will include six turf fields and a concession stand on a 28-acre site that previously served as a city dump until the 1970s. The project is expected to benefit local youth sports programs, including those at Penn College.

The loan, which includes $190,000 in principal forgiveness, is contingent upon a $160,000 match from the local chamber of commerce. This funding will facilitate essential stormwater management improvements to ensure the site is safe for public use. Christina emphasized the project's compliance with environmental regulations, noting that inspections will be conducted to maintain standards throughout the construction process.

The meeting also addressed the necessity of public engagement, with plans for a public meeting to discuss the cleanup alternatives and gather community feedback. Officials reassured attendees that thorough environmental assessments had been conducted, confirming the site’s suitability for redevelopment.

As the project moves forward, it represents a significant step in utilizing federal EPA funds to enhance community infrastructure while addressing past environmental issues. The anticipated construction kickoff is set to begin soon, with hopes of completing the fields in time for the upcoming sports season.
