Community Rodeo Project Moves Forward Amid Neighbor Concerns

In a recent government meeting, officials reviewed the progress of a conditional use application for a rodeo arena associated with the Red Level Baptist Church. The project, which had been previously postponed, aims to enhance community engagement through educational rodeo events for local youth.

Kathy Priest, representing the church, provided updates on compliance with county requirements, including the installation of a landscape buffer and sound management measures. The church has secured a licensed general contractor, Jeremy Onorado of Hallmark Construction, to oversee the permitting of accessory structures, including an announcer stand and a carport. These structures had previously raised concerns regarding their legality due to lack of permits.

Priest emphasized the educational benefits of the rodeo, which fosters skills such as problem-solving and sportsmanship among participants. She also addressed neighbor concerns about noise and lighting, stating that sound would be limited to Saturdays and that lights would be turned off by 9 PM. The church has taken steps to mitigate light pollution, including the installation of sunscreen barriers to shield neighbors from direct light.

During the meeting, board members expressed ongoing concerns about the impact of lighting on nearby residences. Staff confirmed that the lighting must comply with non-residential standards, and a photometric plan will be required to ensure compliance with light intensity regulations.

The board is expected to make a decision on the conditional use application soon, with the potential for further conditions to be imposed to address neighbor concerns. The church's commitment to community engagement and compliance with county regulations will be key factors in the board's deliberations.
