During the recent Committee of the Whole meeting, the council addressed several key topics, including appointments to the Tree Commission and a contentious branding initiative for the city.
Mayor Pro Tem Witten initiated the discussion by nominating Shelly A. Strip for a second term on the Tree Commission, which was unanimously approved. Two additional nominations followed: Michael Brunson and Helena Starnes, both of whom were also endorsed without opposition. Council members expressed gratitude for the high caliber of applicants willing to serve the community.
The meeting took a significant turn when Council member Griswold raised concerns regarding the city's branding and marketing initiative developed by North Star Place. He requested that the council direct city staff to withhold implementation of the branding concept until it receives full council approval. Griswold emphasized the importance of citizen representation in such impactful decisions, especially given the potential costs associated with the new branding.
The council debated the procedural aspects of Griswold's request, ultimately agreeing to schedule a more in-depth discussion on the branding issue during the next Committee of the Whole meeting on November 5. The vote on whether to set aside time for this discussion resulted in a tie, with four members in favor and four opposed, alongside one abstention.
Additionally, the council clarified that a project concerning 606 Pitts Avenue, which had been anticipated on the agenda, was withdrawn by the applicant and would not be discussed during this meeting. This withdrawal means the project must return to the Planning Commission if the applicant wishes to pursue it in the future.
The meeting underscored the council's commitment to community involvement in governance and the careful consideration of branding that reflects the city's identity.
