Seniors outraged by drastic membership fee increases

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed proposed increases to membership and class fees at the local senior center, sparking significant concern among community members. The plan suggests raising the membership rate for residents from $5 to $12.36 annually, while non-residents would see their fees increase from $30 to $35. Additionally, a new fee of $2 per class for instructed fitness sessions was proposed, with a punch card system allowing seniors to purchase 11 classes for $20.

The advisory committee approved these changes, which were communicated to seniors through a marketing campaign. However, feedback has been mixed, with many seniors expressing dissatisfaction. One trustee emphasized that the intent behind the fee adjustments was to create a fair user fee system, but acknowledged that the proposed increases could disproportionately affect seniors who rely on these services.

Concerns were raised about the financial burden on residents, particularly as some seniors attend multiple classes weekly, potentially leading to annual costs exceeding $600. Community members argued that non-residents, who do not contribute to local taxes, should pay higher fees for classes.
