Community unites to combat addiction stigma at Texas rally

In a recent meeting of the Smith County Commissioners Court, Jason Macklemore, director of aftercare services for Foundation and president of the Greater Tyler Recovery Oriented Systems of Care, shared his personal journey with addiction and the importance of community support in recovery. Macklemore emphasized that addiction is a disease characterized by isolation, which can strip individuals of their identities and hope. However, he noted that being part of a supportive community has provided him and others with renewed purpose and freedom.

Macklemore was joined by a diverse group of individuals, including those in recovery, their families, counselors, and law enforcement officials, all united in their mission to combat the stigma surrounding substance abuse and mental health disorders. He expressed gratitude for the support from Judge Franklin and the county commissioners, which enables their organization to continue its efforts in fostering a recovery community.

Commissioner Pam Frederick then read a resolution recognizing September as National Recovery Month, highlighting the significance of the Big Texas Rally for Recovery. This event, which has expanded to 15 cities across Texas, aims to celebrate recovery and raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The resolution underscores the importance of addressing stigma and promoting understanding within the community to support those on their recovery journeys.
