City leaders defend budget amid crime concerns and growth

During a recent government meeting, city officials discussed the ongoing challenges and successes of Sunrise, particularly in relation to public safety and city services. A key point raised was the city's impressive record of not raising taxes for 16 consecutive years, a feat that sets Sunrise apart from many other municipalities facing financial pressures.

Commissioners highlighted the city's comprehensive service offerings, including its own police and fire departments, water, wastewater, and natural gas services. Police Chief Renzone reassured officials that while crime exists, it is not out of control compared to previous years, particularly pre-COVID. He noted that crime statistics show a general improvement, with only slight fluctuations in certain areas. Renzone emphasized that the department is adequately staffed and equipped to handle current demands.

Fire Chief McNamara echoed these sentiments, stating that his department is fully staffed and well-compensated, ranking among the top five in Broward County. Both chiefs expressed confidence in their ability to serve the community effectively without immediate requests for additional resources.
