School District Achieves Major Drop in Absenteeism and Dropout Rates

In a recent meeting, officials from Prince William County Schools (PWCS) reported significant progress in reducing chronic absenteeism and dropout rates, while also emphasizing the importance of community engagement and employee retention.

The district has successfully decreased its chronic absenteeism rate from 21.7% to 16.2%, a reduction of 5.5%. Notably, 55 out of 95 schools experienced decreases of 5 percentage points or more, with seven schools achieving reductions of 10% or more. The dropout rate also saw a decline, dropping from 6.9% to 4%, with specific improvements among English learners and Hispanic students.

Employee retention rates remained stable, with overall retention at 90.4% and teacher retention at 90.5%. This consistency reflects ongoing efforts to create a supportive work environment, highlighted by the \"You Belong Here\" initiative aimed at fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the district.

The meeting also addressed the importance of family and community engagement, noting that 39% of families who registered for engagement sessions attended. Continuous improvement plans are in place across all schools and departments, ensuring alignment with the district's strategic goals.
