School District Reaches Landmark Settlement in Special Education Case

In a recent meeting, the board of the DeWarn Unified School District announced the approval of a significant settlement agreement related to a special education case. The agreement, finalized on October 2, 2024, resolves claims between the district and the parents of a student involved in a due process case (OAH case number 2024090005). Under the terms of the settlement, the district will provide and fund educational services for the student, while the parents will release any claims against the district in exchange for these services.

The meeting commenced at 7:06 PM following a closed session where the settlement was discussed. Board members present included Vice President Carroll, Board Member Diaz, President Finlay, Board Member O'Guin, Board Member Howard, and student representatives Priscilla and Honey. The meeting began with a flag salute led by Board Member Carroll, followed by a review of the district's beliefs, vision, and mission, which Board Member O'Guin was tasked to present.
