Bellevue School District celebrates record graduation success

During a recent Bellevue School District meeting, Scott Powers, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, and Marie Friebos presented a report on academic counseling and graduation success, highlighting the district's impressive graduation rates and support systems for students.

Friebos announced that the district achieved a 93% graduation rate for the class of 2023, with an extended graduation rate of 97% for the class of 2021. Additionally, approximately 75% of the last two graduating classes qualified for guaranteed admissions programs through the Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program (WAGAP), meeting college academic distribution requirements and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The presentation emphasized the importance of graduation pathways, which allow students to meet graduation requirements through various means, including military, career and technical education, and post-secondary education options. Bellevue School District currently offers six out of eight available pathways, significantly contributing to the high graduation rates.

Friebos also detailed the district's comprehensive support systems, including school counselors who provide one-on-one guidance and college and career advisors who assist students with post-secondary planning. For students needing additional support, the district has implemented programs such as graduation success coaches and specialized support for those with interrupted formal education.

Looking ahead, the district aims to enhance support for students with unique educational needs, explore performance-based pathways, and encourage marginalized students to participate in advanced coursework. The meeting underscored Bellevue School District's commitment to fostering academic success and ensuring that all students have the resources they need to graduate.
