City Approves Vibrant Mural to Transform Parking Structure

In a recent meeting of the Midvale City Redevelopment Agency, board members discussed the approval of a significant public art project—a mural to be installed on the west-facing wall of a parking structure at 7860 South Bingham Junction Boulevard. The project, which has been in the works for over a year, aims to enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal and serve as a welcoming symbol for visitors entering from West Jordan.

Aubrey, a representative involved in the project, detailed the mural's themes of sustainability, innovation, teamwork, and trust, which align with the core values of Zions Bank, the project's partner. The selected artist, chosen from a pool of 119 applicants nationwide, will incorporate elements reflective of Utah's environment, including colors reminiscent of the Great Salt Lake and local mountains.

The board approved a $50,000 commission for the mural, which is expected to be completed between September 26 and October 10, weather permitting. Discussions also touched on the mural's visibility and potential lighting options to enhance its appearance at night, with board members expressing enthusiasm about the project’s impact on the community.

Concerns were raised regarding the financial responsibilities associated with the mural's upkeep, particularly the expectation that the city would manage maintenance costs. Some board members suggested that larger corporate partners like Zions Bank should contribute more significantly to such projects, especially given their substantial revenues.
