Seattle secures historic 160 million settlement for Duwamish cleanup

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing efforts to address environmental justice and climate change in Seattle, particularly focusing on the Duwamish Valley. Chair Strauss emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to funding and program coordination, highlighting the integration of the Duwamish Valley Action Plan with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) initiatives. The Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) reported a substantial increase in its budget from $8 million in 2018-2019 to approximately $30 million today, reflecting the city's commitment to combating the climate crisis. Despite a reduction in general fund contributions, OSE has managed to maintain staffing levels while effectively channeling funds into community programs.

Officials underscored the importance of being proactive and agile in securing additional funding, particularly in light of federal initiatives aimed at promoting environmental justice.
