Honor Flight Proclamation Celebrates Veterans and Their Sacrifices

During a recent government meeting in Carter County, Mayor Patty Woodby issued a proclamation honoring the Appalachian Highlands Honor Flight Mission 10, scheduled for October 11-13, 2024. This initiative aims to recognize and celebrate the service of over 200 veterans, providing them with an opportunity to visit significant memorials and monuments in Washington, D.C., including the D-Day Memorial and the Virginia Military Institute.

The proclamation highlighted the organization's commitment to honoring veterans since its inception in September 2021, emphasizing the healing and camaraderie fostered through these flights. Mayor Woodby expressed gratitude for the volunteers and donors who make these flights possible at no cost to the veterans.

Veterans present at the meeting shared their experiences and the significance of the upcoming trip, which includes a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Al Hughes, a board member of the Honor Flight organization, encouraged community support for fundraising efforts to sustain the mission, inviting residents to participate in local events.

The meeting also included administrative updates, with the approval of previous minutes and discussions regarding local landfill issues.
