Budget discrepancies reveal hidden salary increases

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered around salary adjustments for key positions within the department, highlighting discrepancies in compensation structures. An official raised concerns regarding the current pay scale, particularly the 8% differential applied between ranks, such as from lieutenant to captain and captain to deputy chief.

The official pointed out that the assistant chief's position had not been aligned with this differential, prompting a request for an increase. Upon reviewing relevant legislation and ordinances, it was revealed that the department had not been adhering to the established formula for salary calculations.

The budget currently allocates $159,000 for the assistant chief's position; however, the correct amount, based on the legislative formula, should be approximately $166,967. Similarly, the chief's position is budgeted at $173,034, but it should be adjusted to around $176,684 to comply with the formula.

These findings raise important questions about budget adherence and the equitable compensation of department officials, suggesting a need for a thorough review of salary structures to ensure compliance with existing legislation.
