Housing Crisis Deepens as Developers Seek Public Bailouts

During a recent government meeting, concerns were raised regarding the management and oversight of affordable housing projects, highlighting significant issues with budgeting and planning processes. A member of the council expressed frustration over the lack of votes to prioritize the needs of individual clients, emphasizing that the procedural integrity is critical in addressing affordable housing challenges.

The discussion referenced a previous project, known as the Kelly project, which exceeded its budget by seven figures. The developer involved sought financial assistance from the council, a move that was supported by the nonprofit organization ShelterJH. This situation underscored the ongoing struggle to maintain financial accountability and adherence to established plans for leasing and affordability.

Further complicating matters, the council member pointed out that a recent proposal included an undefined category for affordable housing, which does not align with existing regulations. The absence of codified goals for households earning between 120% and 160% of the Area Median Income (AMI) was noted as a significant gap in the current housing strategy. The council member criticized the disorganization in the review process, indicating that plans were being submitted to the Development Review Committee (DRC) without proper alignment with the housing supply board's evaluations.
