Budget Chaos Sparks Concerns Over Meridian School Funding

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the proposed millage rate for the Meridian Separate School District and Meridian Community College (MCC), amid concerns over frequent budget revisions. The council expressed frustration over receiving multiple versions of the budget, with one member noting that every budget received over the past six weeks had been different, including a last-minute change just before the meeting.

The council confirmed that the value of one mill is $424,430, and outlined that the Meridian Separate School District requires seven mills for debt service, while the district maintenance request has seen a slight decrease from 55 to 54.9 mills. MCC is set to receive three mills, as requested.

The total proposed millage rate for the city is 52.7 mills, with the overall millage, including schools, totaling 121.6 mills. This represents a decrease of 0.3 mills from the previous year’s total of 122.94 mills. The council is set to hold a public hearing on September 17, 2024, to finalize the fiscal year 2025 budget, although there was a noted lack of public interest in the proceedings.
