Kent declares week without driving to promote alternative transport

During a recent government meeting, Kent Mayor Dana Ralph announced a proclamation designating September 30th through October 6th, 2024, as \"Week Without Driving.\" This initiative aims to promote alternative transportation methods such as biking, walking, and public transit, particularly for residents who rely on these options, including people with disabilities, seniors, and marginalized communities.

The proclamation emphasizes the city's commitment to fostering a safe and sustainable environment, highlighting the negative impacts of overreliance on driving, including traffic congestion and pollution. By encouraging non-motorized transportation, the city seeks to enhance mobility options and improve public health.

The initiative will invite residents to explore Kent's extensive transportation infrastructure, which includes 35 miles of multi-purpose trails, 17 miles of bike lanes, and various public transit options. Mayor Ralph urged community participation, aiming to cultivate a more transportation-literate city and promote social equity and environmental sustainability. The meeting concluded with members of the bicycle advisory board joining the mayor for a photo to commemorate the proclamation.
