In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the impacts of Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on October 9th as a Category 3 storm along the southwest central coast of Bridal. The storm brought significant wind and rainfall to the region, with peak gusts recorded at 92 miles per hour in Marineland and 84 miles per hour in Flagler Beach. While hurricane-force gusts were observed, sustained winds did not reach hurricane levels in the county.
The most pressing concern highlighted was the unprecedented rainfall, which ranged from 12 inches in the central areas to as much as 19 inches in Daytona North. This heavy rainfall, primarily occurring from Wednesday night into Thursday, has led to severe flooding, particularly on the west side of the county, where flood control measures are minimal. Notably, Crescent Lake reached its highest recorded level, prompting officials to call for improved monitoring of the lake's water levels by the weather service.
The meeting underscored the need for enhanced flood management and weather tracking systems to better prepare for future storms and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events on local communities.
