In a recent government meeting, officials reported significant progress since June, particularly regarding beach management and community engagement in Flagler County. The discussions centered around the potential establishment of a Municipal Service Benefit Unit (MSBU) aimed at addressing the needs of property owners along the barrier island.
Consultants from PFM Consulting presented findings that led to the decision to pursue an MSBU, focusing specifically on the unincorporated areas of Flagler County. This decision followed extensive community outreach, including over ten town hall meetings attended by approximately 415 residents, and a property owner survey that garnered 807 responses, representing a 12% participation rate.
The survey revealed strong community awareness and concern regarding beach preservation, with 96% of respondents acknowledging ongoing challenges related to beach management. Notably, 90% indicated that beach preservation is crucial to their quality of life, and 93% deemed the need for a structured beach management plan as urgent. The primary concerns identified were erosion control and dune renourishment, with 80% of participants highlighting these issues.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the need for federal funding to support a new study by the Army Corps of Engineers, which is essential for evaluating critically eroded sections of the coastline. Officials emphasized the importance of maintaining communication with federal legislators to secure funding for this study, which is a prerequisite for any subsequent beach restoration projects.
The meeting concluded with plans to present further details on coastal engineering and permitting at the upcoming November agenda meeting, underscoring the county's commitment to addressing the pressing issues of beach erosion and community safety.
