Local heroes honored for saving lives in house fire

In a recent meeting of the Amherst County Board of Supervisors, the board honored three local heroes for their courageous actions during a recent house fire. Van Burt, Tim Talley, and Rachel Gilliland were recognized for risking their lives to rescue neighbors trapped inside a burning residence on October 13, 2024.

The meeting began with a pledge of allegiance and a prayer for guidance and safety for first responders. Following the approval of the agenda, the board opened the floor for public comments, but no citizens chose to address the board.

The highlight of the meeting was the resolution honoring Burt, Talley, and Gilliland. The resolution detailed the events of the fire, which escalated to a working structure fire with entrapment. Thanks to the quick actions of the three individuals, all occupants were safely evacuated, including one bedridden resident. The resolution also acknowledged the efforts of local fire departments and first responders who managed the situation.

The board unanimously adopted the resolution, and Chief Geraldine Garrett of the Zymag's Volunteer Fire Department presented a plaque to the heroes, emphasizing the critical nature of their actions and the potential for a much worse outcome had they not intervened.

The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude for the bravery displayed by the community members and first responders, reinforcing the importance of local heroes in ensuring public safety.
