Traffic safety overhaul aims to protect pedestrians and students

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant advancements in traffic safety initiatives, particularly focusing on the Safe Streets Act of 2023, also known as Bridal 1123. The meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) and the Public Safety Commission, emphasizing the importance of automated traffic enforcement and infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety.

Key components of the discussion included updates on collision site reviews and the implementation of Safe Routes to School programs. Officials presented data on 31 intersections that have received traffic signal enhancements, including modifications for right turns on red and the introduction of lead pedestrian intervals. These changes are designed to improve safety for pedestrians, particularly in areas frequented by schoolchildren.

Wade Holland, the Vision Zero coordinator, underscored the critical role of supplemental appropriations from the council, which have expedited the progress of these initiatives. He noted that the funding has allowed for significant advancements in the technical elements of the Safe Streets Act, facilitating a more rapid implementation of safety measures.
