School Board Faces Backlash Over Foreign Exchange Student Ban

During a recent school board meeting, public comments highlighted significant concerns regarding foreign exchange student policies and school safety initiatives.

Shannon Tillman, a parent and substitute teacher, passionately addressed the board about the district's decision to eliminate foreign exchange students at Carrboro High School due to capacity issues. Tillman shared her experience hosting a Serbian student, Mayakov, who transformed from a skeptical teenager into an ambassador for cultural exchange. She urged the board to reconsider the policy, emphasizing the positive impact such programs have on fostering global citizenship among students.

Carrie Hamill also spoke, raising three key issues. She requested an update on the upcoming school year safety summit, suggesting that a more accessible schedule could enhance community participation. Hamill also called for increased transparency regarding enrollment numbers and district finances, and she urged the board to consider an opt-out option for families concerning the handling of personal identifiable information (PII) in the district's AI policy.

The meeting concluded with the board approving the consent agenda unanimously, followed by discussions on planning for the fall 2024 Board of Education retreat.
