School District Considers Major Shift in Start Times

In a recent meeting, district officials discussed potential changes to school start and end times for the 2025-2026 academic year, aiming to better align schedules across grade levels. Mr. Pyle outlined a proposal that would see middle school students starting their day at 8:25 AM, alongside elementary schools, while junior high and high school students would begin earlier, at 7:15 AM and 7:45 AM, respectively.

The proposed adjustments are designed to enhance the safety of younger students, who often wait for buses in the dark during early morning hours. The administrative team emphasized that these changes are still tentative and contingent upon factors such as bus transportation availability. The discussions have included input from parents and guardians, with the goal of creating a schedule that is more conducive to the needs of families.

Additionally, there was mention of possibly adjusting the start time for Loftus School to around 8:00 AM, which could improve overall traffic flow in the area. The meeting also touched on research indicating that later start times for junior high and high school students align better with their natural sleep patterns, as teenagers often struggle to wake up early.

The district administration plans to continue evaluating these proposals and will seek further input from stakeholders before finalizing any changes.
