City Council Approves Demolition of Dangerous Atrium Hotel

In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed critical updates regarding water conservation and the demolition of the Atrium Hotel and Convention Center.

The council addressed concerns about the city's water storage levels, noting that triggers for conservation measures would activate if storage falls below 70%. Vice Mayor Leticia emphasized that any restrictions on water usage would also affect Yoder, a neighboring entity, under existing agreements. The council unanimously adopted a municipal water conservation plan, empowering the mayor to sign the necessary documents.

Additionally, Matt Williams, the director of community development, provided an update on the asbestos abatement and demolition of the Atrium Hotel. Following a resolution passed in August declaring the building dangerous and unsafe, the city moved forward with plans for demolition after the owner failed to make progress or provide a cash bond. The city released a request for bids, receiving seven proposals for the project. After thorough evaluation, Kansas Concrete LLC was recommended as the preferred bidder with a bid of $865,000. The project is set to begin with asbestos removal within 45 days, followed by demolition to be completed within 120 days thereafter. The city plans to finance the project through bonding.
