Community rallies for Domestic Violence Awareness Month events

During a recent government meeting, representatives from the PD Coalition highlighted their ongoing efforts to support victims of domestic violence in Marion County. Joshua Williamson, the county coordinator, expressed gratitude for the Coalition's 37 years of service and outlined a series of events planned for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. These events include a \"Paint the Town Purple\" initiative on October 1, a kickball tournament on October 5, and a remembrance vigil on October 24 to honor victims of domestic violence.

Gwen Strickland, chairman of the PD Coalition Board, emphasized the organization's reliance on community donations and grants, noting that state funding covers only a fraction of their operational costs. The Coalition has requested an additional $5,000 from Marion County to help sustain their services, which include counseling, sheltering, and assistance with protection orders.

The meeting also featured a presentation from Don Strickland, executive director of the PD RTA, who celebrated the organization's 50th anniversary and its expansion of services across six counties. He highlighted the importance of public transportation in enhancing community access to essential services.

The discussions underscored the critical need for continued support and funding for organizations like the PD Coalition, which play a vital role in addressing domestic violence and providing necessary resources to affected individuals in the community.
