County achieves major broadband expansion for rural residents

In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted significant advancements in broadband access across the county, noting a dramatic reduction in unserved rural residents. A presentation revealed that in July 2019, approximately 48% of rural residents lacked broadband access. However, thanks to ongoing efforts and investments, that figure has now dropped to low single digits.

The meeting showcased the deployment of fiber technology, which is recognized as the most reliable broadband option available today. Currently, fiber has been extended to numerous areas, while other regions still rely on cable modem technology, which provides speeds of up to 1 gigabit per resident. The county has invested around $19 million in broadband projects, with additional support from a $100,000 grant.

Looking ahead, officials announced the acquisition of two new grants totaling $8.7 million, aimed at connecting an additional 500 locations. Construction on these projects has already commenced, with a commitment from HCC to extend fiber access to all remaining unserved areas once the current projects are completed.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of digital literacy initiatives to improve broadband adoption rates. Collaboration with local schools and community organizations is a key focus as officials strive to ensure that all residents can benefit from enhanced connectivity.
