City approves controversial sign variance for Valero station

During a recent city commission meeting, officials discussed a variance request for a gas station located at 5175 Martinez Converse Road. The proposal, presented by Assistant City Manager Nixon Mendez, seeks to modify existing sign restrictions outlined in the city’s ordinance chapter 34.

The request consists of two main components. First, the applicant aims to install three additional logo signs on the gasoline pump island canopy, which would exceed the current allowance of one logo sign not exceeding 32 square feet. The proposed signage includes the name \"Valero\" on one face and the company logo on the other three faces, totaling an additional 25.6 square feet of sign area.

The second part of the request involves a freestanding sign. Current regulations permit a maximum size of 64 square feet for such signs, but the applicant is proposing a sign measuring 93.6 square feet, which would display both the business logo and gas prices.

Mendez noted that a similar signage setup was previously approved for another Valero station in the area. He emphasized that the proposed increase in sign area would enhance visibility, particularly for drivers approaching from the south, where the road inclines and curves.

City staff recommended approval of the variance, citing the benefits of improved visibility for the gas station. The commission is expected to deliberate further on the request in upcoming sessions.
