Lacey Museum prepares for exciting new chapter

In a recent government meeting, the Tumwater Historical Association presented a collection of historical booklets focused on local history and indigenous tribes, which was unanimously approved for inclusion in the museum's collection. The discussion highlighted the importance of preserving local heritage, although the books will not be cataloged by the public library, as they will remain part of the museum's distinct collection.

The meeting also provided an update on the museum's relocation to a new space on Sixth Avenue, set to begin operations on November 1st. The new facility, located in the Bell Center, will offer approximately 1,100 square feet of exhibit space, allowing for enhanced programming and community engagement. The current museum will close on November 8th for renovations, with plans to revamp existing exhibits and introduce new ones, including a significant early aviation exhibit.

Accessibility improvements were emphasized, as the new location will accommodate individuals with disabilities, a feature that was previously lacking. The museum aims to foster a more inclusive environment for research and community interaction.

Additionally, the meeting touched on the 2025 work plan, particularly regarding tribal relations. City officials confirmed their commitment to maintaining strong partnerships with local tribes, including the Nisqually Tribal Council, and will continue to explore collaborative opportunities. The historical commission will also engage with city council members during their annual joint work session to discuss ongoing initiatives and community needs.
