City of SeaTac launches $750000 asylum seeker support initiative

During a recent SeaTac City Council meeting, officials presented the Washington Migrant and Asylum Seeker Support Project (WAMAS), aimed at addressing the urgent needs of asylum seekers in the region. The city is set to receive a $750,000 state grant to implement this initiative, which is part of a larger $25 million state appropriation for asylum seeker services.

The WAMAS project is designed to provide emergency housing and support services for asylum seekers, who are individuals seeking international protection due to conflict or persecution in their home countries. As of late 2023, Washington State is home to approximately 37,000 asylum seekers, with nearly 18,000 residing in King County alone.

The city plans to subcontract the Congolese Integration Network to manage the project, which will focus on providing emergency shelter for up to 90 days, followed by transitional housing. This shift in focus to emergency housing comes in response to an escalating housing crisis affecting asylum seekers, particularly in light of recent encampments in the region.

City officials emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in managing the grant, which mandates that 65% of the funds be allocated to housing costs. The council is expected to approve a budget amendment ordinance to formalize the contract with the state and the Congolese Integration Network.

During the meeting, council members raised questions regarding the selection process for the subcontractor and the overall strategy for ensuring that asylum seekers have a pathway to permanent housing after the initial emergency shelter period. City officials assured that there are plans in place to transition individuals into longer-term housing solutions, with additional support services available throughout the process.

The WAMAS project represents a collaborative effort among various organizations and municipalities to create a coordinated response to the needs of asylum seekers, highlighting the city's commitment to addressing this pressing humanitarian issue.
