City plans ambitious electric vehicle charging initiative

During a recent government meeting, the Oshkosh City Council approved a resolution for a 2024 Neighborhood Capital Improvement Plan, allocating $72,500 in funding. The plan includes various projects aimed at enhancing neighborhood identity, notably through the installation of utility box wraps that celebrate the uniqueness of local communities. Council member Flom expressed enthusiasm for these projects, highlighting their potential to foster neighborhood pride.

In addition to neighborhood improvements, the council discussed the Oshkosh Area Metropolitan Planning Organization's Electric Vehicle (EV) Readiness Plan. This initiative aims to address growing demand for EV charging infrastructure, spurred by requests from local businesses and residents. The council noted that while current capital improvement plans do not include EV projects, they are positioning themselves to take advantage of future funding opportunities.

The plan, developed in collaboration with the East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, involved public input through three meetings, indicating strong community interest in EV charging options. The council is considering a pilot program to explore potential locations for EV charging stations, with a focus on Level 2 chargers for daytime use and Level 3 chargers for quick charging needs.

As the city prepares for future developments in EV infrastructure, the council remains committed to enhancing both neighborhood aesthetics and sustainable transportation options for residents and visitors alike.
