During a recent Richmond Public Schools (RPS) board meeting, significant discussions highlighted both challenges and achievements within the district, particularly regarding student transportation and graduation rates.
A parent of two RPS students, Dakota Fisher, voiced concerns about the district's transportation system, specifically the lack of real-time bus tracking. Fisher noted that while neighboring Chesterfield County has implemented an app for bus tracking, RPS has not rolled out a similar system, leading to delays that disrupt families' schedules. He emphasized the importance of timely communication regarding bus delays, stating that parents should not have to lose valuable work hours due to transportation issues. Fisher urged the board to prioritize the implementation of a tracking system to enhance the overall experience for families.
In contrast to the transportation challenges, the meeting also celebrated notable improvements in graduation rates. RPS reported an increase in the on-time graduation rate from 72% to 78%, marking a 6% rise—the largest increase among medium to large school divisions in the state. The district attributed this success to targeted efforts, particularly among Latino and English learner students, who saw graduation increases of 17% and 19%, respectively. Schools such as Richmond High School for the Arts and Armstrong High School also reported significant gains, with increases of 15% and 8% in their graduation rates.
The board acknowledged the hard work of teachers, families, and students in achieving these results and outlined ongoing strategies to maintain and further improve graduation rates. Initiatives such as the RPS mentorship program, which boasts a 92% graduation rate among participants, and the bilingual LEAP tutoring program for multilingual learners were highlighted as key components of the district's success.
As RPS continues to address transportation issues while celebrating academic achievements, the board remains committed to fostering an environment conducive to student success and community engagement.
