County faces unprecedented recovery after devastating hurricanes

In a recent government meeting, officials provided a sobering update on the extensive damage caused by recent hurricanes in the county. Over 6,000 structures have sustained major damage, with nearly 500 completely destroyed, leading to an estimated repair cost exceeding $1 billion. This figure is expected to rise as assessments continue, highlighting the unprecedented scale of devastation.

County leaders emphasized the community's resilience and cooperation during this challenging recovery phase, which they anticipate will take months, if not years. The Solid Waste Director, Kevin Pliska, reported significant progress in debris removal efforts, with 186,000 cubic yards of debris cleared so far. He noted that the county is ramping up resources and has initiated a debris management site, focusing on the hardest-hit areas, particularly in Zephyrhills and Dade City.

Pliska acknowledged the emotional toll of the destruction, particularly the loss of large trees, which he described as akin to losing family members. The county has divided the affected areas into 16 zones, prioritizing public safety in their cleanup efforts.
