Schools tackle student support amid testing fatigue crisis

During a recent school board meeting, officials discussed the implementation and effectiveness of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework aimed at improving student outcomes. MTSS categorizes students into three tiers based on their academic needs, with Tier 1 serving approximately 80% of the student population who can succeed without additional support. Tiers 2 and 3 cater to students requiring more assistance, with Tier 2 addressing those in the 11th to 29th percentile and Tier 3 focusing on students at the 10th percentile or lower.

The board emphasized the importance of refining interventions for students in Tiers 2 and 3 while continuing to enhance Tier 1 instruction. Recent initiatives include the implementation of the Bookworms curriculum and the piloting of new materials at the middle school level.

Data visualizations presented during the meeting highlighted the performance of special populations, including low-income students, those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and multilingual learners. The updated dashboard metrics for 2024 reflect growth from the previous year, although discrepancies were noted between the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) results and FastBridge assessments. While IAR results showed significant improvement, FastBridge scores declined, raising concerns about potential test fatigue among students.

Officials noted that students face a rigorous testing schedule, with up to 11 assessments occurring within a 37-day window after spring break. The board is currently exploring adjustments to the testing schedule to mitigate fatigue and improve overall student performance.
