Funding Crisis Looms for Local Fire Companies Amid Staffing Shortages

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the continued funding for the New Windsor, Lineborough, and Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Companies, focusing on staffing challenges and budget allocations. Deputy Chief Paul Sopko presented the need for ongoing financial support through CC Visa to maintain Emergency Medical Services (EMS) staffing and fire apparatus drivers, highlighting a significant shortfall in personnel due to recruitment difficulties.

As of October 1, the allocated budget of $320,000 for staffing had been depleted, with 51 vacancies still unfilled. Sopko indicated that aggressive recruitment efforts are underway, but it could take up to four months to fully staff the remaining stations. To address immediate needs, the county is considering an additional $450,000 to cover staffing costs for the next four months.

The funding will be administered through CC Visa, with a new invoicing system proposed to ensure accountability and track expenditures. This approach aims to provide full reimbursement for staffing costs, unlike previous arrangements that did not cover all expenses. The discussion also touched on the ongoing financial burdens faced by the fire companies, with some representatives expressing concerns about their ability to maintain operations without adequate funding.
