Kimchi Day celebration unites families and traditions in Virginia

Kimchi, a staple of Korean cuisine, is more than just a dish; it embodies the rich cultural heritage of Korea, symbolizing family, resilience, and tradition. This fermented vegetable dish, primarily made from cabbage and seasoned with red chili peppers, garlic, and ginger, is celebrated for its complex flavors—salty, sweet, spicy, and sour.

As November approaches, Korean families prepare for Gimjang, a communal event where they gather to make large batches of kimchi following the cabbage harvest. This tradition not only strengthens family bonds but also connects generations through shared culinary practices.

In Virginia, November 22 has been officially designated as Kimchi Day, thanks to Delegate Irene Shin, who introduced the resolution in 2022. The resolution received unanimous support from both chambers of the General Assembly. To celebrate, the Virginia Kimchi Day festival will take place at the Fairfax County Government Center on November 8, from 11 AM to 3:30 PM. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to make kimchi, enjoy a meal, and take home their own batch.

Local officials are encouraged to participate in this cultural celebration, highlighting the importance of kimchi in Korean heritage and its role in fostering community connections.
