City launches ambitious housing program with $150000 grant

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress of a planning grant aimed at enhancing multifamily housing units in the community. The grant, valued at $150,000, is currently in its first phase, with hopes of advancing to a second phase that would provide additional funding for implementation.

The city of Eau Claire has expressed interest in replicating the program, which is set to launch in January. Each participating community will contribute staff time to develop various program elements. Following the completion of these preparations, materials will be submitted to qualify for phase two funding.

A significant aspect of the meeting was the collaboration with FACT TV, which filmed an assessment of the multifamily units alongside an appraiser. This initiative aims to serve as a marketing tool, allowing property owners and tenants to engage with the program and ask questions.

The current budget allocates $390,000 for the program, with an estimated total cost of $304,600 for the identified buildings. Officials indicated that any remaining funds would carry over to the next year, where an additional $110,000 has been earmarked for continued efforts. There is also anticipation of receiving further grant support from the city of Madison to expand the program, particularly in underserved neighborhoods.

The housing advisory committee has prioritized updating multifamily units, and while the future of the program remains uncertain, there is optimism about leveraging existing funds and partnerships with nonprofits to enhance housing strategies. The next steps involve obtaining quotes for necessary improvements, which will be presented to the council for approval before implementation begins.
