Students shine at state math competition and national wrestling championship

During a recent government meeting, several notable achievements within the local education system were highlighted, showcasing the academic and athletic excellence of students in the community.

Chief Communications Officer Anthony Johnson introduced the \"Points of Pride\" segment, celebrating students from Northwest and Rossview High Schools who excelled in the 2024 state math competition. Notably, Catherine Kim from Northwest and Carson Carol from Rossview tied for 2nd place in algebra, while Jason Moon secured 5th in geometry and Kale Weber achieved 7th in algebra 2. This marks the highest number of winners for the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) since 2018.

The meeting also recognized Jania Johnson from Kirkwood High School, who made history by becoming the first female wrestler from Tennessee to win a national championship at the 16 U 155 weight class. Her achievements include being a national runner-up and undefeated in national duels, underscoring her status as a rising star in the sport.

Additionally, Spanish Immersion Elementary School at Barksdale was honored as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School, a prestigious recognition awarded to only six schools in Tennessee this year. This accolade reflects the school's commitment to academic excellence and its efforts to close achievement gaps among student subgroups.

The meeting also included a public comment from Andrea Brown, who raised concerns about the transition from 5th to 6th grade curriculum. She emphasized the need for better communication and preparation for students moving up in grade levels, particularly regarding writing and technology skills.

The board proceeded to approve the consent agenda, indicating a smooth continuation of administrative business following the celebratory announcements. The meeting concluded with a focus on policy monitoring, ensuring ongoing oversight of educational standards and practices.
