During a pivotal visit to Lebanon, UN peacekeeping chief Jean Pierre Lacroix engaged with peacekeepers and local officials amid ongoing tensions in the region. Lacroix's trip, which is part of a three-day mission, included visits to UN positions in Mansouri and the headquarters in Nakura, where he met with injured peacekeepers affected by recent clashes between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah.
Expressing gratitude for the dedication of both military and civilian staff of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Lacroix acknowledged the challenges faced by the mission during this turbulent period. His discussions underscored the critical role of UNIFIL in maintaining peace and stability, particularly in light of the ongoing security concerns.
In a significant meeting with Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Lacroix, accompanied by Special Coordinator for Lebanon Janine Henness Plaszak and General Aroldo Lazzaro, head of the peacekeeping mission, emphasized the importance of UN resolution 1701. This resolution, established in 2006, aims to prevent further conflict and ensure the safety of civilians in the region.
As Lacroix continues his visit, further updates on the mission's activities and discussions are anticipated, highlighting the UN's ongoing commitment to peacekeeping in Lebanon.
